Attorney General visits government lawyers in Leeds

The Rt Hon Victoria Prentis KC MP visited the Government Legal Department’s (GLD) Leeds office on Friday 27 January 2023 to meet with civil servants, including government lawyers.

The Attorney General was joined by Elizabeth Hambley, Director General of GLD’s Commercial with Trade and International directorate and champion of the Leeds office.

GLD is staffed with nearly 3,000 colleagues and over 2,500 lawyers, 172 of whom are based in Leeds – up from 112 in 2021.

Government lawyers work on some of the most complex and varied legal issues of the day, ranging from education and transportation to health.

Oath Keepers-linked attorney ruled incompetent to stand trial, will get mental treatment in custody

Kellye SoRelle, the woman who is claimed to be general counsel for the right-wing Oath Keepers militia, will be held in federal custody for mental health treatment after a judge ruled Tuesday that she was incompetent to stand trial.

SoRelle is facing several charges related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, including felony charges of obstruction of an official proceeding and obstruction of justice. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Police, attorney in a rush to file charges in refugee scam

With the police taking time to conclude the investigation into the Bhutanese refugee scam, the District Attorney Office of Kathmandu is struggling to bring criminal cases against the accused.

Nepal Police, which is investigating the high profile scam, had earlier said that it would be submitting the investigation report to the District Attorney Office by Sunday for legal verification. But it failed to do so. This will leave very little time for the District Attorney Office to study the investigation report, because as per the law, cases must be filed in court by Wednesday.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The mother of a 6-year-old Virginia boy who shot and wounded his teacher had a series of miscarriages and post-partum depression in the year before the shooting, her attorney said Friday, after she was arraigned on charges of child neglect and failing to secure the handgun her son used in the shooting.

Police say the boy fired a single shot at his first-grade teacher, Abigail Zwerner, on Jan. 6, striking her in the left hand and chest. She spent two weeks in the hospital and has had four surgeries since shooting.
