The Rise and Fall of an Enterprise Cluster in Africa: The Jewellery Industry in South Africa and the Emergence of Lab-Grown Engagement Rings

South Africa has a rich history in the mining industry, with diamonds and gold being significant contributors to its economic growth. The country’s vast mineral wealth led to the development of a thriving jewellery industry, particularly in cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town. However, the landscape of the jewellery industry in South Africa has witnessed both successes and challenges, including the emergence of lab-grown engagement rings as a disruptive force.

The rise of the jewellery industry in South Africa can be attributed to various factors. The abundance of natural resources, including diamonds and gold, provided the raw materials necessary for …

An Update on the New York Noncompete Ban: It is Unlikely the Governor Will Sign It Anytime Soon

We wrote previously about how nobody seemed to be talking seriously about the noncompete bill that was passed by both the New York General Assembly and Senate last month. If signed by Governor Hochul, the bill would ban non-competes without a carveout even in the sale of a business context, which both California and the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed rule includes.

Luckily, in the weeks since we wrote that post it appears that people are finally taking notice. Several legal and industry organizations in New York have either submitted or are in the process of drafting letters or otherwise reaching …

Lawyers make their case to Kanesatake

Representatives of two law firms pitched their services at a community meeting last week that was billed as a chance to find a replacement for longtime Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) legal counsel Dionne Schulze.

The only problem? Council chiefs have not agreed on whether Dionne Schulze’s services have been terminated.

What’s more, at least one of the two lawyers, Nadir André of Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), said his firm has no intention of replacing Dionne Schulze, instead aiming to take over the land claim file formerly headed up by lawyer Peter Hutchins, who died on January 13, 2023.

Reminder: Minnesota Non-Compete Ban Takes Effect on Saturday, July 1

As we previously reported, Minnesota will soon become only the fourth state (along with California, Oklahoma and North Dakota) to ban non-competitors.

The state’s new law renders void and unenforceable all covenants not to compete entered by employees or independent contractors on or after July 1, 2023. The only exceptions are noncompetitive agreements relating to the sale or dissolution of a business.

A “covenant not to compete” is defined in the statute to exclude non-disclosure and non-solicitation provisions, and the law states that no other provisions in an agreement containing a non-compete shall be affected. The law also prohibits …

Surrey taxpayers paid $316K to former mayor’s lawyers: documents

The city’s statement of financial information for 2022, which was posted online last week, includes a payment of 316,663.50 to Peck and Company Barristers.

Richard Peck, the named partner of that firm who also defended Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou, was one of a team of lawyers that secured an acquittal for McCallum, who was accused of lying to authorities when he made a report saying his foot was run over during

Maine and Iowa Enact Job-Specific Limitations on Noncompetites

The two states recently have enacted restrictions on noncompete agreements being used in certain professions.

In Maine, on June 1, 2023, the Governor signed into law LD 688/HP 457, entitled “An Act to Protect Access to Veterinary Care by Prohibiting Noncompete Agreements.” The act amends Maine Revised Statute title 26, § 599-A, which already prohibits an employer from entering into a noncompete with an employee if the employee is earning wages at or below 400% of the federal poverty level. The new amendment expands the noncompete ban to licensed Maine veterinarians, with a carve out for those with an ownership …
