Surrey taxpayers paid $316K to former mayor’s lawyers: documents

The law firm that represented former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum in his public mischief trial last year was paid more than $300,000 by the city, according to municipal financial records.

The city’s statement of financial information for 2022, which was posted online last week, includes a payment of 316,663.50 to Peck and Company Barristers.

Richard Peck, the named partner of that firm who also defended Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou, was one of a team of lawyers that secured an acquittal for McCallum, who was accused of lying to authorities when he made a report saying his foot was run over during

Maine and Iowa Enact Job-Specific Limitations on Noncompetites

The two states recently have enacted restrictions on noncompete agreements being used in certain professions.

In Maine, on June 1, 2023, the Governor signed into law LD 688/HP 457, entitled “An Act to Protect Access to Veterinary Care by Prohibiting Noncompete Agreements.” The act amends Maine Revised Statute title 26, § 599-A, which already prohibits an employer from entering into a noncompete with an employee if the employee is earning wages at or below 400% of the federal poverty level.
