An Update on the New York Noncompete Ban: It is Unlikely the Governor Will Sign It Anytime Soon

We wrote previously about how nobody seemed to be talking seriously about the noncompete bill that was passed by both the New York General Assembly and Senate last month. If signed by Governor Hochul, the bill would ban non-competes without a carveout even in the sale of a business context, which both California and the Federal Trade Commission’s proposed rule includes.

Luckily, in the weeks since we wrote that post it appears that people are finally taking notice. Several legal and industry organizations in New York have either submitted or are in the process of drafting letters or otherwise reaching …

Remember When Donald Trump Discussed Seizing Voting Machines and Invoking Martial Law? Special Counsel Jack Smith Sure Does

Remember, back in 2020, when Donald Trump held a truly off-the-rails meeting in the Oval Office in which seizing voting machines and invoking martial law were discussed as part of a desperate, unhinged attempt to stay in power? Special counsel Jack Smith apparently does. And he’s asking lots of pointed questions about it as part of his criminal investigation into Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election and the insurrection that followed—which, like Smith’s documents investigation, could result in another federal indictment for the ex-president.

CNN reports that Smith’s team “has signaled a continued interest in a chaotic Oval Office

Lawyers make their case to Kanesatake

Representatives of two law firms pitched their services at a community meeting last week that was billed as a chance to find a replacement for longtime Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) legal counsel Dionne Schulze.

The only problem? Council chiefs have not agreed on whether Dionne Schulze’s services have been terminated.

What’s more, at least one of the two lawyers, Nadir André of Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), said his firm has no intention of replacing Dionne Schulze, instead aiming to take over the land claim file formerly headed up by lawyer Peter Hutchins, who died on January 13, 2023.

Anti-vaccine doctor’s fans flood court, claiming to be ‘common-law grand jury’ in his $66.6M lawsuit

Room 31 at the Vancouver law courts is normally a quiet, somewhat boring place, where lawyers present brief arguments on procedural questions and spectators rarely present.

But Friday morning was different. As a clerk attempted to organize a long list of matters on the docket, about two dozen supporters of anti-vaccine activist Dr. Daniel Nagase flooded into the courtroom and declared himself a “common-law grand jury under the Magna Carta.”

Members of the crowd, some wearing shirts reading “Purebloods Stand Together,” took turns reading out a statement charging a government lawyer with obstruction of justice for attempting to have Nagase’s

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Litigation filed by a North Carolina local elected official alleging House Speaker Tim Moore’s ruined his marriage by having an affair with his wife is ending, attorneys said on Monday, two weeks after a lawsuit was filed.

Lawyers for Scott Lassiter and Moore confirmed the resolution in separate emails. They said little or nothing more when asked for details, such as whether the lawsuit filed in Wake County court was being withdrawn or a settlement reached.

“We won’t be commenting on this matter further,” Moore attorney Stacy Miller said.

Lassiter’s lawsuit, which sought at least $200,000
